MG Rover Longbridge

Project Status: Completed
Location: Longbridge Birmingham
Client: St Modwen

Phased project comprising of demolition and major asbestos removal to the former MG car plant at Longbridge, Birmingham with Squibb Group acting as Principal Contractor.

The site is situated next to a live railway line (some Squibb operations performed under railway possession). Works included the removal of large quantities of asbestos based materials (all forms of ACM), decontamination and removal of oil based materials, demolition of 30 acres of buildings steel/concrete framed to slab level and crushing and regrading of the site, including Power Station. Demolition in the main undertaken by long reach excavators fitted with attachments with all the resulting materials being processed on site for reuse.

The site is adjacent to a car production facility so Squibb Group are utilising TechnoAlpin V12 dust suppression units during the works. These units can be positioned strategically to suppress dusts created by remote demolition activities. The TechnoAlpin V12 uses up to 90% less water than traditional dust suppression techniques. Manual handling is avoided as the unit is remotely operated and this property also discounts the opportunity cost of allocating labour to dust suppression duties. It is imperative that dust is kept to an absolute minimum next to car paint workshops.
